While Beachgoers Fled Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Captures Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, describes the renowned beach as her back yard. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed cracking sounds reverberating through the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had rushed up the slope in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up behind her. It was a rescuer, dashing in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone running in the path that everyone was trying to flee, and hauling that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running into something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to move in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just totally full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery Amidst Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many acts of valour in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, officers and paramedics attending to many those hurt.

Community Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to be shared by the local area, with the beach facility adjacent to the scene of the incident serving as a makeshift hospital. It was shared that other team members were also seen responding bravely, such as rushing into the ocean to save people who were struggling.

After the events, statements of appreciation were shared. One post shared gratitude for the responders who exhibited that “compassion will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of lifeguards issued a communication, noting they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and solidarity. We are touched by the compassion shown towards our team,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it aids those affected.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the team acted heroically from the instant the violence started until late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” said a mayor.

“The team demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our internationally renowned beaches secure for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.

“As we grieve and process the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is important that we focus on just how much light we have observed in the midst of such darkness.”
