Last year, star Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide so closely with the mythologized image promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement instead of a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a tailor-made persona of the president. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a TV series released last fall, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “save” Russia from chaos. While he is called a different name, the message is clear: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this identical story instead of undercutting it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the focus to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is presented as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, these events took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a selection process with no shortage of contenders. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country in practice.

Interestingly, the move to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s debut as 007. The grittier version led Russian media and social media to draw visual parallels with their leader. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with his appeared on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. His influence is hinted at through portraits or orders from on high. Now, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally validate the exact legends it perhaps aims to examine.
