Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
