Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
